According to several reports, federal cannabis legalization legislation might be reintroduced.
WASHINGTON — The US Congress is said to be considering new federal cannabis legalization legislation that will be prime sponsored by Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-New York.
Nadler is the chair of the House Judiciary Committee and is one of the most powerful Democrats currently sitting in the 117th Congress.
The legislation comes as other members of Congress and state lawmakers are continuing the push for nationwide legalization.
The trade news website Marijuana Moment was the first to release this information through its daily email newsletter.
According to Marijuana Moment journalist Tom Angell, the news could mean big news for legalization efforts across the country.
Companies in the vaping space should take note, especially firms that develop marijuana and cannabis-derived vape products and for firms that want to break into such a market once the United States federal government offers legalization to all fifty states and its overseas possessions.
“Multiple sources told Marijuana Moment that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) plans to refile his federal cannabis legalization bill this week.”
“The legislation, which comes as senators are finalizing their own bill, will have changes from the version that passed in 2020,” Angell wrote.
For those who don’t remember, Nadler introduced the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act and secured a bipartisan, historic victory to advance the legislation in the House.
However, due to Trumpists and drug warriors in the Senate GOP, the MORE Act stalled and entered sine die as the previous session of Congress closed with the era of anti-marijuana and anti-vaping President Donald Trump.
An op-ed published in the Denver-based Westword Magazine noted that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, intends to push for legalization in the coming months.
Schumer is expected to side with his allies in the House of Representatives in order to deliver legislation to be reviewed and signed into law by President Joe Biden.
