According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tobacco smokers are about 30 to 40% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-smokers. Moreover, research presented in April 2017 at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., had indicated that vaping was associated with a 42% increased risk of myocardial infarction or heart attack, of which diabetics already have an increased risk.

On the other hand, a new study analysing data from the Population Assessment of Tobacco & Health (PATH) study, found no link between exclusive ENDS (electronic nicotine delivery systems) use and an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. While, a 2016 study published in the journal Arteriosclerosis had reported that vaping may trigger cells called EPCs (endothelial progenitor cells) leading to damaged blood vessels.

Vapes remain the lesser of two evils

Similarly, a study titled, “The Association Between E-Cigarette Use and Prediabetes: Results From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016–2018” published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, looked for a relationship between smoking, vaping and prediabetes.

The compiled data suggested such a link, indicating elevated blood sugar levels even among e-cigarette users who reported never smoking traditional cigarettes. However, highlighted Biswal, the findings do not prove that vaping directly raises the odds of prediabetes, but given that smoking is known to be linked to higher diabetes risk, it is “certainly plausible,” he said, adding that vaping could influence diabetes risk, too.

Meanwhile, given that the link between vaping and diabetes remains uncertain, and the one between smoking and diabetes is certain, tobacco harm reduction experts keep reminding of the relative safety of vaping products, highlighting that they should only be used as smoking cessation tools. When used in this manner, their relative benefits are undeniable.
