Review: Vuse Pro – British American Tobacco

The Vuse Pro is a pod from the tobacco giant British American Tobacco (BAT). It uses sealed e-liquid cartridges and is designed to be simple to use, with no settings required. Beyond its simplicity, the device raises several questions in an ultra-reactive pod market.

Simplicity and Design

Product from the Tobacco Industry
We believe that reducing tobacco-related risks is a major opportunity to improve public health, and according to the well-known Cochrane organization, e-cigarettes are currently the most effective tool for smoking cessation on the market. However, we consider the tobacco industry to be a cold machine driven by a single goal: profit. In our view, the fundamental difference between the tobacco industry and the vaping industry lies in the cynicism and hypocrisy of tobacco companies. They are trying to “ride” the wave of risk reduction initiated by vaping, claiming to help smokers take care of their health while continuing to manufacture and sell products that still kill one in two smokers today. The tobacco industry is also trying to influence policies to establish such strict regulations that only they could survive. In this context, we always encourage our readers to prioritize vaping products made by companies independent of Big Tobacco. Understand our stance on the tobacco industry.

The Vuse Pro pod is rather understated. Its lines are fine, logos are discreet, and the cartridge integration is cleverly designed for visual harmony. No doubt about it, it’s well-made. The Vuse Pro is about 11 cm tall and only 1 cm thick, making it a lightweight and discreet product that can be taken anywhere.

A Pod That Disappoints

The Vuse Pro pod contains an integrated 360 mAh battery. While not particularly high, the pod is very compact, making it difficult to get more battery life in such a small format. The Vuse Pro is designed for indirect inhalation (mouth to lungs like a traditional cigarette). The draw is tight.

At the top of the pod, the cartridge is held by two magnets. The magnetism is adequate; the tank doesn’t fall when the pod is flipped upside down. A small window allows you to see the e-liquid level in the cartridge. However, this 2 mm space is located at the top of the tank rather than the bottom, making it impossible to know how much liquid has been used without frequently removing the tank to check the remaining liquid. The mouthpiece is flattened and comfortable against the lips.

In the middle of the pod, a discreet LED lights up during inhalation and charging. Vapor is produced upon inhalation; there is no button or adjustment for airflow or power.

Under the pod, a connector specific to the Vuse Pro is revealed. The pod charges exclusively with the proprietary cable. Better not lose it, as it is not possible to charge the device with a standard USB or USB-C cable.

The cable is supplied with the Vuse Pro. It is magnetically attached and covers part of the pod. Charging to 80% takes about 35 minutes. We consider this charging time quite long for a 360 mAh battery. Fortunately, you can vape while the device is charging.

Our Vuse Pro did not come with a cartridge. They must be purchased separately. They are available online (either as individual packs or by subscription with decreasing prices based on quantity ordered) or in tobacco shops. The nicotine level per ml ranges from 0 to 18. We tested the wild strawberry flavor at 6 mg/ml.

The cartridge is sealed and contains a coil. When the tank is empty, the whole thing is discarded and replaced with a new product. It is therefore not possible to refill the e-liquid in the Vuse pod.

The resistance value of the coil is not explicitly specified. We disassembled a cartridge to identify the coil. We do not recommend this operation due to the risk of injury. It contains a porous ceramic coil with no value indicated on it.

In terms of vaping, it is a huge disappointment on many fronts.

When inhaling, there is a noticeable air leak that seriously affects the draw with turbulence. When vaping with a “classic” pod, you feel the volume of vapor filling the mouth, accompanied by the flavor of the liquid. Here, that’s not the case, and the flavor only appears at the end of the puff. Simply put, to get a better idea, it feels like inhaling through a straw. It’s as surprising as it is disappointing.

During our tests, we quickly switched cartridges, thinking the first one was defective. The result was exactly the same with the second.

By pinching the cartridge with your fingers at the junction with the pod body, the draw improves. This reduces the air leak, but don’t expect high-quality vapor.

As for the flavors, it’s equally mediocre. Our wild strawberry flavor is only wild in name, and one barely identifies a vague red fruit taste without a distinct profile. It’s muddled.

The throat hit is also not what one would expect from a 6 mg/ml e-liquid; on the contrary, it’s very mild and barely noticeable.

The Vuse Pro is widely available in tobacco shops, making it very accessible. It could be a relevant vaping device for smokers who could find a simple, effective product from their regular tobacconist. Smokers who choose vaping need flavors and a throat hit that can satisfy their desire for traditional cigarettes. According to our tests, that is not the case here.

Self-taught and curious by nature, I developed my journalistic skills in the field by joining the Vaping Post in 2017. As a former smoker who converted to vaping, I immediately felt the need to understand in detail all aspects of this smoking risk reduction method that has enabled me to successfully quit smoking where previous methods had failed.
review-vuse-pro-british-american-tobaccoThe Vuse Pro doesn't measure up to current market products. Its severe lack of flavor and almost nonexistent throat hit disappoint. While the product aims to be easy to use with no settings and minimal handling, the expected results fall short. An unconvincing product.
