Professionals can expect the visits of inspectors
By acting the “law to strengthen the fight against smoking” the Canadian National Assembly also prohibits vaping in specialty stores. After one week, Quebecois professionals and vapers’ voices are raising.
A specialty store’s owner reacts about the ban on using the vaporizer where tobacco is prohibited in Quebec: “In a restaurant, a convenience store, the cinema, we understand. But in a specialty store, a closed space where access is denied to the under-18s, it makes no sense.”
Discontent rises among the owners and managers of vaping shops who claim for an exception. It is important, they argue, to help smokers optimize their equipment to efficiently get out of tobacco.
With a unanimous vote, Lucie Charlebois, the Quebecois Minister of Health, is clear about law enforcement. Professionals are aware of unannounced visits of inspectors who are, she declares, in sufficient amount to efficiently cover the Province. The stiff fines are deterrent for transgressors: up to 25,000 Canadian dollars (CAD) or about € 18,000 for a first offense and 125,000 CAD (over € 88,000) if repeated.
Future e-cigarette regulations and a possible ban of flavors
Stressing that when they want to stop smoking, customers are not trying gums or patches in the shops, Mrs Charlebois considers that the arguments developed by the professionals does not make sens and refuses any transition period. In turn, she encourages professionals to make use of media-based educational approaches. The tone is light and jovial but determined.
The authorization of flavors for electronic cigarettes is already an important exception to the law, according to the Minister, since flavored tobacco is prohibited. She threatens to prohibit flavors sales by regulation “if we establish that people start smoking more via the electronic cigarette.”
What should be alarming is seeing governments doing everything in their power to destroy an industry that offers less harmful alternative to smoking, even putting in place laws that would criminalize possesion of vaping equipment as if it was heroin, all supposedly to protect the population, yet tobacco is readily available at every corner, people of all age groups use it and there has been ZERO talk about making tobacco illegal or impossible to get… That is the real issue, governments protect the bigger players, its not a question of health but of money.
…………..Human breath emissions of VOCs.
1999
“The medical community has long recognized that humans exhale volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Several studies have quantified emissions of VOCs from human breath, with values ranging widely due to variation between and within individuals. The authors have measured human breath concentrations of isoprene and pentane. The major VOCs in the breath of healthy individuals are isoprene (12-580 ppb), acetone (1.2-1,880 ppb), ethanol (13-1,000 ppb), methanol (160-2,000 ppb) and other alcohols. In this study, we give a brief summary of VOC measurements in human breath and discuss their implications for indoor concentrations of these compounds, their contributions to regional and global emissions budgets, and potential ambient air sampling artifacts. Though human breath emissions are a negligible source of VOCs on regional and global scales (less than 4% and 0.3%, respectively), simple box model calculations indicate that they may become an important (and sometimes major) indoor source of VOCs under crowded conditions. Human breath emissions are generally not taken into account in indoor air studies, and results from this study suggest that they should be.”

Chemical analysis of exhaled human breath using a terahertz spectroscopic approach
2013
“As many as 3500 chemicals are reported in exhaled human breath. Many of these chemicals are linked to certain health conditions and environmental exposures. This experiment demonstrated a method of breath analysis utilizing a high resolution spectroscopic technique for the detection of ethanol, methanol, and acetone in the exhaled breath of a person who consumed alcohol. This technique is applicable to a wide range of polar molecules. For select species, unambiguous detection in a part per trillion dilution range with a total sample size in a femtomol range is feasible.”

“Cynthia Lyons, East Sussex County Council acting director of public health, said, “Second hand smoke can harm our health and contains over 4,000 chemicals, some of which are known to cause cancer.”
Well compared to the 3500 chemicals reported in human breath, some of them known to cause contagion, Cynthia Lyons’ concern over only 4,000 seems quite pathetic,
I don’t particularly want to breath the contents of some stranger’s lungs either, but up until now had considered it unavoidable.
Of course banning other people breathing in all enclosed public spaces would be impracticable – compulsory masks, perhaps?
Anyone that would classify and treat ecigs as tobacco didn’t do their homework. They literally will be killing people with this bill. No matter how much we tried to educate the provinces, it fell on deaf ears. Our message and information with peer reviewed studies proved how much Vaping was impacting the smoking numbers, they just would NOT listen. Instead they all marched to their own beat, would NOT respect the science and factual evidence presented. We are now convinced there is an agenda. This doesn’t have anything to do with the health of their citizens, but rather funding, money and yes corruption. It is taking place all over the globe. It is shameful and everyone involved should be held accountable with their ideology about gateway and youth theories and banter. Recent studies are showing that smoking numbers have plummeted to all time lows and we all know the tool that is helping with those numbers. Vaping is here to stay, and if the QC gov’t wants to continue with this rhetoric, they will be held accountable and their citizens will suffer! Shame on them! Oh and did you know that passive vapour is not a health hazard? Use google the studies are available in black and white! Pitiful.
Problem is the same folks making up all the junk science about smoking and ecigs are also the same ones claiming lowered smoking rates…….In other words nothing they state can be accepted as true or even close to true. They have eveyr reason to lie about smoking numbers just to make themselves look good. Even the Government knows smoking rate polling is untrustworthy and people lie all the time. Especially the CDC and the ACS.
World Atlas: More People Smoking Cigarettes than Ever
There are more people smoking now than ever before, despite health warnings and the rising price of cigarettes. In 1980, 4,453 billion cigarettes went up in smoke, which increased to 6,319 billion in 2010. By 2020, you can expect to find nearly seven billion cigarette ends littering the world.
Top of the charts in terms of nicotine addiction are Asia and Australia, which is where 57 percent of cigarettes are smoked today.
These alarming statistics are among many of the intriguing facts laid bare in the ninth edition of Dan Smith’s The State of the World Atlas.
Globally I agree, the numbers are going up. I don’t know if the Stats in Canada are made up, either way, I do know in a town of about 13K that 300 have switched over to vaping. Of that 13K I would suggest that 2000 of them smoked. So that is a BIG piece of the pie. If we make vaping harder to access, we will keep people sick and harm others with passive “smoke” If we allow access we can start to heal the world and rid this planet of tobacco smoking. AND anyone that doesn’t agree with that, definitely has an agenda other than the health of their constituents.
I certainly don’t have an agenda other than exposing the corrupton but I definitely do not agree that passive smoke harms anyone other than those whose asthma may be triggered by it and cause some transient irritation in smoke laden indoor settings. I also disagree that all smokers are sick or will even eventually get sick. Even the most rabid antis don’t claim that all smokers will die from a smoking related disease – only 50% according to them and even that is grossly exaggerated. If you think the vaping issue has been perverted, you should take the time to look at how far the smoking issue has in itself been perverted for decades over a political/corporate/puritan agenda.
Where I do agree is here: Those who are ill and more particularly with breathing issues because that is about the only illness that is more prevalent on smokers than former and never smokers, or their illness has been made worse because of smoking and want to take up vaping instead, should not have this option taken away from them. Doing so is not only immoral but could even qualify as criminal.
…This pretty well destroys the Myth of second hand smoke:
Lungs from pack-a-day smokers safe for transplant, study finds.
By JoNel Aleccia, Staff Writer, NBC News.
Using lung transplants from heavy smokers may sound like a cruel joke, but a new study finds that organs taken from people who puffed a pack a day for more than 20 years are likely safe.
Ive done the math here and this is how it works out with second ahnd smoke and people inhaling it!
The 16 cities study conducted by the U.S. DEPT OF ENERGY and later by Oakridge National laboratories discovered:
Cigarette smoke, bartenders annual exposure to smoke rises, at most, to the equivalent of 6 cigarettes/year.
146,000 CIGARETTES SMOKED IN 20 YEARS AT 1 PACK A DAY.
A bartender would have to work in second hand smoke for 2433 years to get an equivalent dose.
Then the average non-smoker in a ventilated restaurant for an hour would have to go back and forth each day for 119,000 years to get an equivalent 20 years of smoking a pack a day! Pretty well impossible ehh!
….Join forces for the right for all to vape ,smoke or just exhale 3500 human chemicals into the air………..from your own bodies creation.

Yet a simple look at the chemistry shows us that its:
The Chemistry of Secondary Smoke About 94% of secondary smoke is composed of water vapor and ordinary air with a slight excess of carbon dioxide. Another 3 % is carbon monoxide. The last 3 % contains the rest of the 4,000 or so chemicals supposedly to be found in smoke… but found, obviously, in very small quantities if at all. This is because most of the assumed chemicals have never actually been found in secondhand smoke. (1989 Report of the Surgeon General p. 80). Most of these chemicals can only be found in quantities measured in nanograms, picograms and femtograms. Many cannot even be detected in these amounts: their presence is simply theorized rather than measured. To bring those quantities into a real world perspective, take a saltshaker and shake out a few grains of salt. A single grain of that salt will weigh in the ballpark of 100 million picograms! (Allen Blackman. Chemistry Magazine 10/08/01). – (Excerpted from “Dissecting Antismokers’ Brains” with permission of the author.)
Now you understand why any smoking or vaping bans are absolutely INSANE as you would have to literally OUTLAW humans themselves from indoors for the same reasons you justify smoking bans or vaping bans.
Yeah, who thought it was a good idea to put a Vaper (ex-smoker) outside with smokers? That is like putting an alcholic in a bar to drink water. Thank you QC, ON, NS, MB and BC… Wow. Ideology and fear mongering at it’s finest! THESE provincial gov’t’s should be in every corner of Canada supporting this technology and if they aren’t ask them why not!
Vaping is just another form of activity same as chewing gum or smoking a cigarette or just reading the newspaper over coffee in a restaurant. Its just something people want to do or don’t want to do. Vaping itself is just another something to do for the masses and just like smoking they cant prove any harm from it or the other. So forget the Harm Reduction propaganda unless you somehow have proof smoking actually causes something.
JOINT STATEMENT ON THE RE-ASSESSMENT OF THE TOXICOLOGICAL TESTING OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS”
7 October, the COT meeting on 26 October and the COC meeting on 18
November 2004.
“5. The Committees commented that tobacco smoke was a highly complex chemical mixture and that the causative agents for smoke induced diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, effects on reproduction and on offspring) was unknown. The mechanisms by which tobacco induced adverse effects were not established. The best information related to tobacco smoke – induced lung cancer, but even in this instance a detailed mechanism was not available. The Committees therefore agreed that on the basis of current knowledge it would be very difficult to identify a toxicological testing strategy or a biomonitoring approach for use in volunteer studies with smokers where the end-points determined or biomarkers measured were predictive of the overall burden of tobacco-induced adverse disease.”
In other words … our first hand smoke theory is so lame we can’t even design a bogus lab experiment to prove it. In fact … we don’t even know how tobacco does all of the magical things we claim it does.
The greatest threat to the second hand theory is the weakness of the first hand theory.
1) The anger should have risen before the passing of the law. I didn’t see too many vaping merchants rise against it in Quebec. Correct me if I am wrong and point me to the ones that went to the public consultations in August. By memory there was only one.
2) There is nothing to understand about banning vaping “In a restaurant, a convenience store, the cinema,”. Vaping merchants wanting exemptions just for their vape shops imply that second hand vapor is harmful and should only be practiced among consenting adults in vape shops. The merchants are giving in to the lies in the hope to save their business but they are gaining absolutely nothing. The only way they can save vaping and their businesses is to fight the lies. It is obvious they haven’t learned anything from the history of smoking when the tobacco industry just rolled over and played dead just to appease the beast. There is no appeasing of the beast no matter how much you give in. You fight it all the way down to the corruption or accept defeat, as we have seen in Quebec.
