The Meeting of the Parties (MOP1) is taking place for the first time this year in Geneva between the 8th and 10th October, and will focus on ways to end the illicit trade of tobacco products.
It is estimated that 10% of all the cigarettes and other tobacco products produced are traded illegally, which equates to tax revenue losses of approximately $30 billion a year. The MOP1 will discuss, global, regional and national systems, that shall be set in place to track tobacco products from their production site to the initial sales site, as of 2023.
The COP8 which took place last week focused on strategic frameworks and priorities, cross-border advertising and the environmental impact of tobacco use and cultivation. This summit also looked at the level of global progress in reducing smoking worldwide.
