Review: Argus Pro 2 – Voopoo

The Argus Pro 2 by Voopoo follows in the footsteps of the Chinese manufacturer's previous models. This kit consists of a box that holds a 5ml Voopoo tank and has a built-in battery. It’s designed for direct inhalation vaping from 30 to 80 W.

The ever popular Argus

The Pro 2 isn’t going to revolutionize the Argus collection, but it does demonstrate how coherent this vape range is. With a 3000 mAh built-in battery and a 5 ml tank, you can look forward to long vaping sessions. It has no major flaws, but we might have chosen to use a different coil.

Solidly built

The front face of the Argus Pro 2 features a large fire button, a fairly impressive screen, settings buttons and a charging port. Just under the fire button there’s a loop for a lanyard. It’s a shame they didn’t include a lanyard too!

The Argus Pro 2 is made of zinc alloy with a leather-look covering. The name of the model is embossed discreetly along the edge of the box. It’s nicely contrasting, and the overall level of finish is great. It screams quality.

The colour screen is easy to read and displays all of the information you need to use it. The Argus Pro 2 can deliver up to 80 W in power – more on that later. Just below the screen there’s a little switch to lock the box so you don’t need to press three times as usual. Below the “+” and “-“ buttons there’s a USB-C port for charging the box, protected by a silicone tab.

The Argus Pro 2 has several different menus: Smart, which suggests the optimum power level, RBA, Turbo and a puff counter. We didn’t notice a huge difference in how it felt to vape using these different modes. The chipset is simple, with no fuss or unnecessary options. That’s a good choice for this box which only works with the clearomizer designed for it.

 DL vaping? Sort of…

Magnets on the top of the box hold the tank of the Argus Pro 2 in place. The hold is firm with no sideways play. With its 5 ml tank, you won’t have to refill it very often. The cartridge is tinted but still transparent enough to see how much e-liquid is left at a glance, without having to take out the tank.

The two air intakes are at the top of the clearomizer, one on each side. The decision to use top airflow inlets limits the chances of leakage from the bottom of the tank. But you still need to put the coil in the right place to avoid leaks altogether. With the air intakes fully open, you get an airy vape – use 60W or more for a cold vapour, which suits fruity flavours perfectly. If you play around with the air intake you can get a warmer vape if you prefer that.

Filling it is pretty standard – just lift the silicone tab and insert the bottle tip. The opening is quite wide, making it compatible with most bottles on the market.

The kit comes with two coils: the 0.3 ohm PnP X is for use from 32 to 40 W and the 0.15 ohm Pnp X is for vaping from 60 to 80 W. Both coils deliver great flavours. We found that vaping with the 0.3 ohm coil and a restricted airflow brought out the sweetness in our e-liquids better. Using the 0.15 ohm coil needs a lot more power though. Even with a 3000 mAh battery, the charge fell off a cliff when we used it at more than 70 W. You might be tempted to charge the box while you’re using it , but like other Voopoo models, you can’t do both. That’s a pity because this more powerful vape is a treat. The poor battery life and the fact that you can’t charge and vape really spoiled it for us.

Summary

What we like

  • Level of finish
  • Simple menus
  • Locking button
  • Vape quality

What we don’t like

  • Can’t vape and charge at the same time
  • Battery life too limited for the 0.15 ohm coil

Self-taught and curious by nature, I developed my journalistic skills in the field by joining the Vaping Post in 2017. As a former smoker who converted to vaping, I immediately felt the need to understand in detail all aspects of this smoking risk reduction method that has enabled me to successfully quit smoking where previous methods had failed.
review-argus-pro-2-voopooThe Argus Pro 2 kit is really nice. The level of finish is very good. It doesn’t leak or seep liquid and it delivers great vape flavours. Sadly, the 0.15 ohm coil is just too demanding for a 3000 mAh battery. Plus, you can’t vape while the pod is charging, more’s the pity.
