Battery-powered mods are very popular, and it’s no coincidence. Batteries nowadays are small but still have an excellent lifespan. The only other accessory you’ll need is a good clearomizer.
Everything you need to know about mods with built-in batteries
Some mods have a built-in battery that’s sealed inside, and in others it’s removable. Deciding between these options is easy, it just depends on your personal preferences and expectations.
- Why choose a box with a built-in battery?
- Recharging your mod battery
- Maintaining your built-in battery mod
- Which clearomizer can I use with my mod?
- How long does a built-in battery mod keep its charge?
- What model of mod should I choose?
The main benefit of a built-in battery over a removable battery is simplicity. You don’t need to buy batteries and a charger separately, your mod is ready to use straight out of the box.
Plus, built-in batteries are LiPo batteries, which use more efficient technology than replaceable batteries. Even when they’re the same size they last longer, making mods less bulky.
On the flip side, you have to remember to recharge them regularly. You can’t just put in new batteries when they run out like you can with mods that use 18650 batteries for example.
Charging a built-in mod battery is incredibly easy: you just plug it into a USB adapter via the cable in the box. Most mods have a micro-USB charging socket like cellphones, so there’s no problem with using the same cable.
On the other hand, it’ll recharge much faster with an AC adapter than via a computer with limited power to its USB ports. If you get a 2A adapter instead, it will recharge twice as fast as a 1A – if your box can use a 2A.
Mod don’t need much maintenance as all of the essential components are sealed inside. A wipe with a damp cloth from time to time will keep it clean, and that’s about all you need to do.
Even so, it’s important to avoid impacts, moisture and excessive heat. Like any electronic device, don’t leave it in direct sunlight on the parcel shelf of a car for example, or its battery performance could drop.
There’s a standardized connector for mods and clearomizers, and it’s called the 510 connector. All models use the same thread and electrical connectors, so you can use any clearomizer you like on your mod.
However, some rare models like AIOs have a specific connectors and aren’t interchangeable. Remember to check that before you decide.
The battery life of any mod depends directly on its battery capacity, shown in mAh or milliamp per hour. The higher this number, the longer the battery will last but the bigger the mod will be.
How long the battery will actually last also depends on the power level you vape at. You use four times more power at 40 W than at 10 W, so it makes sense that the battery will only last a quarter of the time. That means it’s important to choose a mod with a good enough battery life for the way you use it.
There are now dozens of models on the market, and new ones are coming out all the time thanks to technical progress by manufacturers. We regularly subject them to in-depth tests so we can tell you about the best performing products.
Looking beyond the technology, a mod is something you carry around all day, so certain don’t overlook some subjective criteria. Choose a box that will meet your expectations and your needs. Take a look at our reviews – they’re there to help!
